Location: Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, Borrego Trail Notes: Colony is becoming denser, but does not appear to be enlarging. This taxon has had confused taxonomy. Various references ascribe it as Colocasia esculenta var. fontanesii, others as Colocasia fontanesii. Kew Plants of the World and the paper "Two new species and a new record for Colocasia (Araceae: Colocasieae) from Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast India, R. Gogoi1 and S. Borah2, Gardens’ Bulletin Singapore 65(1): 27–37. 2013", both support the full species, Colocasia fontanesii. which appears legitimate and matches these plants. Changing my determination. Plant robust, to 2+ m tall; petiole and peduncle deep purple red; spathe 12-15cm, leaves glossy, bronzed/purple wash. |

Location: Exposed Oso Creek channel between Marty Russo Youth Athletic Park and La Barca Road in Misson Viejo Notes: Approval by the City of Mission Viejo to have volunteers remove Dittrichia in the Oso Creek channel. Seven volunteers participated in the removal over 2 days. The Dittrichia was in a sandy and mostly shady riparian water channel, growing intermixed wth Spanish sunflower (Pulicaria paludosa). Plants were budding and just beginning to flower. All plants in the channel were easily hand pulled and bagged. We removed forty 42-gal bags of material. Between the riparian area and the ball field, the stream passed through a deep dirt/gravel-walled channel. We pulled what we could. For the large plants, however, we tried a weed wacker but found the best solution was to cut them at ground level with hand loppers. Because the cut material was in the sun and there were very few flowers, it was left on the ground to dry out. Removal of the outbreak took 54 volunteer hours. Recheck 10/1/20 The plants left to dry out are dead. No evidence of flowers or seed. |
