Coordinates 36.23400, -117.07040
Elevation 2318 meters
Location Description Wildrose Canyon, Death Valley National Park, along the east side of Wildrose Canyon Road (Charcoal Kilns Road), uphill from Thorndike Campground.
Notes We observed 10 plants in bloom just off the east side of this dirt road, but the next quarter-mile sporadically featured small clusters of plants, mostly on the east side of the road. This site is across the road and very slightly uphill from a much larger colony of plants (separate observation). However, the photo attached to this record is of particular interest because it documents how the blossoms of this species can range from a very pale center to remarkably bold red / burgundy markings on both petals and sepals.
