po167219 Salix lasiandra var. lasiandra John Rawlings, Nona Chiariello, Herbarium Group 2020-10-07
Location: Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, Stanford University; Searsville Lake north of boat dock Notes: Tricky because the bud scales are hairy all over - more so than i noticed on other trees - but the scale is fused and the stipule and petioles under magnification have significant glands (with unaided vision the glands are cryptic). Lesson is sometimes magnification is required to see diagnostic characters. Isolated tree, vegetative, at edge of reservoir. Red, Sandbar, and Arroyo willows also grow around the reservoir. |

po188229 Salix lasiolepis John Rawlings, Diane Renshaw, Sara Timby 2021-05-01
Location: Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, Stanford University Notes: Common and widespread shrub or small tree along creeks and in marshy areas, and taller trees in interior of the Willow woodland southwest of Searsville reservoir, where it is a component of the canopy with Red (S. laevigata) and Pacific willow (S. lasiandra), and scattered individuals and patches of Sandbar willow (S. exigua). Field identification by leaf gestalt: usually oblanceolate (widest between middle and leaf tip) with entire narrowly revolute margins, blades bifacial, i.e. dark to shiny green above, lighter below. Other characters examined when available: flowering before leafing out, pistillate capsules glabrous, staminate florets with two anthers, Pontania pacifica leaf galls. >>> Juvenile leaves can be short-silky abaxially for S. lasiolepis, which has suggested to some observers that such plants are Sitka willow (Salix sitchensis) because the two species have similar leaf shapes in our region.

po276234 Salix Xpendulina Teal Derrer 2024-04-14
Location: Searsville Lake Notes: One of many non-native weeping willows, likely garden escapes naturalizing in the Searsville watershed, species or hybrid ID uncertain, several distinct types with different degrees of weeping branches, including some that don't weep, possible hybrids with native spp.
po276229 Salix Xpendulina Teal Derrer 2024-04-14
Location: boat ramp Notes: Likely over 100 years old, this tree may be transitioning from individual to clonal colony. Falling, or “sprawling” while remaining attached at the roots is a growth habit known to several willows, including the native Arroyo Willow, Salix lasiolepis. While this messy sprawl suggests a state of decline, it may 38 actually be a good strategy for colonizing new areas, competing for territory and persisting over the long haul. In weeping willows invasiveness is positively correlated with weak wood—a trait which varies between willow species and cultivars. |
