OVERVIEW OF CALFLORA QUERIES

SPECIES INFORMATION
Species Query
| Instructions |
This basic search form allows you to search by family name,
common name, scientific name, county, elevation range, growth form,
native status, rarity status, weed status, plant community, etc.
Advanced Species Query
| Instructions |
In addition to everything in the basic species query,
this form allows you to specify parts of the scientific name, wetland status,
federal, state and CNPS listing (rare plants), USDA PLANTS code, etc.
As an option, you can ask for the output in plain text instead of HTML.
Scientific Name Query
Use this page to find species by scientific name,
with respect to several nomenclature authorities.
Landscaper's Species Query
Use this form to find
native plants suited to planting at a particular location
or in a particular environment.

OBSERVATION LIBRARY
Plant Observation Query
| Instructions |
The observation database contains @
800,000 contributed observations of wild plants in California.
This search form allows you to search the database by
county of observation, point of observation (when available),
date of observation, observer/collector, hectares of area observed,
elevation, etc. The results are displayed in a table and
on a map. There is a link to the Calflora Map Viewer for
georeferenced results.
Advanced Plant Observation Query
| Instructions |
In addition to everything in the basic observation query,
this search form allows you to specify a bounding box of latitude/longitude
coordinates, type of observation, scientific name as submitted or as
resolved by Calflora, contributor's unique identifier, etc.
Dynamic Observation Query
| |
This form allows you to query the observation database by characteristics
of observation records -- for instance, location.
It also allows you to query by characteristics of the plants observed
-- for instance, lifeform, or status (is it a weed?
is it rare?).
The query is dynamic in the sense that when you see the results
of the query, you can always get back to the query form to refine
the parameteres and run it again. Further, it is integrated with the map
viewer. If you invoke the map viewer from this form, you can return to the
form later from the map viewer to refine the query.
This query can also produce a species list from a set of observations.
Example:
Cal-IPC invasive plants found in Fresno County, grouped by family, with photographs.
Observation Group Query
There are groups of observations in the plant observation library
that were clearly made in the same place by the same
organization.
This form allows you to search for such groups.
You might use it to find all groups of observations in your county,
or to find all groups statewide in which particular species appear.
Calflora Map Viewer
If a Plant Observation Query finds results which are
georeferenced, you can invoke the map viewer to
look more closely at those results. When you move to a new location
inside of the map viewer, you can press Reload Points,
which will re-execute your original observation query
(minus spatial components) for the area that is
currently visible in the map viewer.
